LEEDS UNITED'S FIRST WIN ON TOUR.

DOWN INJURED.

MR FAIRCLOUGH PRAISES THE DUTCH PLAY.

Leeds United have played their second match of their Dutch tour, their opponents being the well-known Amsterdam club, the Ajax. In a letter received in Leeds today, Mr Arthur Fairclough, the manager, writes "The Ajax team played wonderful football - much better than I ever expected to see in Holland." Leeds United nevertheless won by 4 goals to 1.

Allan Ure, who is acting as the Leeds United trainer on the tour, writes that the Ajax team has been coached by Reynolds, who has played for Sheffield Wednesday and Manchester, and two seasons ago they won the championship of their division.

The night before the match, Leeds United were entertained by the Ajax club to a smoking concert, a dance, and "feast" which is the principal social event of the club's programme. The Leeds team which gained such a handsome victory was composed of Down; Duffield, Menzies; Baker, Mason, Smith; Coates, Lambert, Richmond, Powell, Harris. The Ajax team proved to be little, if any, inferior to the Dutch international side with which United drew last Wednesday; but Leeds attacked with great determination, and Powell early put in a magnificent shot which struck the woodwork. The Ajax team were always dangerous when they got away, and in one determined rush Down had the misfortune to be rather badly injured. Down dashed out to meet the opposing centre forward, and both kicked at the ball together. Down dislocated his knee and neither player took further part in the game. Substitutes were allowed, Hart coming into the half-back line, and Baker keeping goal. Baker immediately made a wonderful save, and Coates scored for Leeds before half-time. The second half opened sensationally, Powell scoring in two minutes from a corner by Harris, whose play was greatly admired. Ajax reduced the lead, but Hart, from fully thirty yards scored with a great shot and one of the home players headed through his own goal. Every effort will be made to get Down fit for the match with Bolton Wanderers.
